I have loved working from a model since taking my first figure drawing class at the University of Georgia. I’m very grateful to all the skilled models that have worked with me.

In this series of paintings, familiar images such as statuettes of the Discus Thrower from the 5th century and the Renaissance-era sculpture of David by Donatello are depicted. I also incorporate obscure replicas of goddesses, warriors, peasants, and animals as subjects. The figures are staged in a still life, but the settings they inhabit are my invention.

I began the Clam House Series out of a strong attraction to old, rural houses and the landscape surrounding them. Working plein air directly in the environment provided me with unparalleled visual information. I call the collection by this name because the rural folk who live there seemed “happy as clams.” The tree in the Friendship Oak painting from Albany, Georgia, was removed by the DOT for road expansion in 1997.

To paint plein air in Italy and France is one of my most exciting experiences as an artist. I am also delighted spending hours in the Louvre and in le Jardin des Tuileries, drawing classic sculptures.

In this series, I explored the figure through color interaction and movement. In works involving two figures, often one is more defined than the other, setting up a psychological tension between the two. Some figures seem to push out from the surface, while others are ambiguous. I also found that just as with Greek sculptures that have survived minus arms and heads, painted figures without all body parts represented can seem complete.

There is nothing like people watching and some of the best places for it are bars and dance clubs.

I started riding horses while living in Colorado in 1986. My new found interest resulted in this series of drawings and paintings.

Life and art would be very boring if everything fit into perfectly into categories all the time. This is a place to put my drawings and paintings that are anomalies.
